As the recipient of a public ‘pension,‘ there are huge negatives this story doesn’t account for. First, to call it a pension Is a misnomer as it’s a Social Security replacement. And, unlike a private pension, which doesn’t impact social security, the public pension does. If you have less than 20 years in the public system there are wonderful rules that leave you with virtually none of the SS benefits earned prior to the public employment. And, even better, your SURVIVOR benefits are whacked substantially as well. Not great, especially, for women like me who were home for many years raising children.
